Fiddler on the Roof is basically about a generation who question the traditions and values or their Jewish parents.
Today young people perhaps question more than they have ever done in the past, the church gets its fair share of questioning and criticism from the young. The theatre group was set up as a new way eight years ago to cater young people in the church and community. Many of the young people in the group belong to the more traditional organisations of the church; but for many it is their only brush with church life. As well as producing a worthwhile end product for you the audience, we are a meeting place twice a week in a relaxed atmosphere where lots of values and beliefs are discussed in the course of our fellowship. It is a large remit and the whole project is thanks to the complete dedication of a large team of very capable adults. Change is healthy, risky, but also inevitable. I came across an interesting article recently - The General Assembly 1971. A Changing Church? More Youth Participation and Responsibility was one of the key factors from the moderator that year when he issued this challenging statement: “The Church is trying to conserve for tomorrow the things that aided yesterday."
