THE GREATEST SHOW
DIGITAL PROGRAMME

Welcome to our digital programme for The Greatest Show 2026. Get your inside look at how this production came to life and the people behind it!

A NOTE FROM OUR CHAIR

It's been another challenging year for all groups in Moray who rely heavily on the Elgin Town Hall to perform.  With refurbishment works now well underway there, the scaffolding that surrounds the shell of the building is almost symbolic of the measures we have all had to embrace to support what we do in the arts and make sure it stays alive whilst our main performance space is out of action.

That is so true for St Giles Theatre Group who can't simply shut down for a few years.  Every missed year would be a generation of young people robbed of the friendship, confidence, resilience and musical theatre performance experience we build. That's what drove us last year to split the company and present a Junior and Senior show separately in the face of limited choices for a stage big enough for us.  What we learnt is that our company makes much better sense together and we are delighted to bring it back this year as one cast spanning ages 10 to 19.

We are privileged and delighted to have been able therefore to secure the auditorium at Elgin Academy for our show this year and are indebted to many people who helped make that happen.  It is fitting, for a company whose cast comes from 6 primary schools and 6 secondary schools (and College!) all across Moray, that the superb facilities of our council's education estate should provide us with the stage we need to shine a light on the extraordinary talent of our young people.

And as ever, our company not only rises to the challenges but sets itself new targets with this being the first original production St Giles Theatre Group has ever performed.  Written by our own Creative Director, Emma Sharpe, to suit our cast, venue and the very spirit of what our group is all about.  This bold new territory pays tribute to the long standing 37 year history of the group by pushing our boundaries further than they have gone before.

Set in the present day in a typical American High School, the long forgotten theatre, closed since 1979, is brought back to life by a new generation who rediscover the space, uncover its history, its secrets and a story that has been waiting to be told. Full of energy, heart and a real sense of magic about what theatre can do, this show is a celebration of courage, creativity and community - where young people step into the spotlight and discover the power of coming together to create something extraordinary. It could have been made for us... oh, yeah - it was !!

Sit back and enjoy - The Greatest Show!

CREATING
"THE GREATEST SHOW"

V5_(w_Info).jpg

When creating the script, Creative Director Emma Sharpe was inspired by the stories that theatres, and in this case - abandoned theatres, hold. The magic that can be found within them, the history they can hold.

This was the basis for the whole show, from the set, characters intentions, costumes and more, everything is rooted in the past being discovered and explored.

Early on in the production, we are introduced to the rivalry between our aspiring theatre kids, and the mysterious shadows.

Heading up these rival teams are Aria and Skye.

Due to the original nature of the production, the cast got to have a large say in their characters decisions and development. This made rehearsals particularly exciting and collaborative for everyone involved.

Poppy Gilchrist as Principal Dunn

Whilst exploring characters, we absolutely cannot forget to shout out our Principal - Helen Alexandra Dunn. Whilst not a shadow or aspiring theatre kid herself, she absolutely has a flair for the dramatics, and yearns for the stage just as much as either group does!

She is the true embodiment of once a theatre kid, always a

theatre kid!

MEET OUR CREATIVES

Now to find out who's behind these characters, music, costumes and more, and to discover what motivates them and their creative decisions.

The creative team are responsible for the direction, music, set, costumes and basically everything you see on stage - the whole vision and aesthetic.

As well as these usual jobs, the team this year were challenged by the task of developing Emma's script in the show you see before you today.

WE WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT VOLUNTEERS

St Giles Theatre Group is entirely volunteer led and run, where everyone's sole focus is ensuring and maintaining that the youth of moray continue to have access to these sorts of experiences.

Over of the course of this year, spanning September to April, we have had 80 volunteers give up well over 500 hours of their time to ensure the young people you see on stage are safe, looked after, and perhaps most importantly... having a great time!

"For me, St Giles isn't
just a theatre group...
it's a family."

Everyone will have their own specific reasons for volunteering, but we think Sharon (Welfare Lead) put it perfectly...

37 YEARS OF VOLUNTEERING PAYS OFF...

In November 2025 we were incredibly privileged to be awarded the Kings Award for Voluntary Service, which is the highest award to be given to groups like ours.

It is an incredible achievement for our group, and only made possible by all of our volunteers over the last 37 years.

The award goes to all volunteers, past, present and future, as a recognition of the hard and quality work devoted to the youth.
